My Letter to the Editor

(The following is my letter to the editor in response to those readers who are upset that our legislators are watching "The Truth Project" in our State House.)

For those of you appalled at the fact some of our state legislators are watching “The Truth Project” in the OUR Capitol, here's some food for thought…

Our nation was clearly founded on biblical principles. George Washington said, “It is impossible to rightly govern the world without God and Bible.” James Madison stated, “We’ve staked our future on our ability to follow the Ten Commandments with all of our heart.”

Many may be surprised to hear the United States Capitol regularly served as a church building, even until well after the Civil War.

Maybe, if we got back to our founding principles and Christian roots our state and nation wouldn’t be in the sorry condition we find ourselves in today.

Let it be impressed on your mind that God commands you to choose for rulers just men who will rule in the fear of God [Exodus 18:21]. . . . If the citizens neglect their duty and place unprincipled men in office, the government will soon be corrupted . . . If our government fails to secure public prosperity and happiness, it must be because the citizens neglect the Divine commands, and elect bad men to make and administer the laws. (Noah Webster, “The History of the United States”)

Elitism Spills Over to the State Level

The elitist attitudes in Washington, that I covered in my last blog, have apparently spilled over into our state politics here in Iowa as well. You can see evidence of this at every turn in Des Moines today and it's breeding the same disdain that we've been seeing at the national level, though it goes virtually unnoticed by the... you guessed it... liberal media.

I refuse to continue calling them the "mainstream" media, as they are no longer mainstream, but have decided to finally start showing their true colors. I only hope that those watching are starting to pay closer attention to their blatant spread of propaganda.

It seems that down in the State House today our officials no longer think they need to listen to "we the people" any longer either. One issue in general will exhibit what I'm talking about... same-sex marriage.

I guess the elitism here started with the seven unelected officials on the Iowa Supreme Court who decided that they knew what was best for us here in Iowa and that they could legislate from the bench. That, in and of itself, is sort of a barometer on the climate in Des Moines today and was only the beginning. It gets worse.

Now it seems as though our elected officials in the House and Senate believe they know better what's best for us as well, as the Republicans in both houses tried to get a "Let Us Vote" bill through and were rejected by those in power... the Democrats.

All the "Let Us Vote" bill would do is give "we the people" of Iowa the right to vote on marriage here in Iowa. It would merely give us the same opportunity that 31 other states had, including more liberal states like New York, California, Maine and New Jersey. The record 31-0 for traditional marriage.

The Democrats in Des Moines are turning a deaf ear to "we the people" of Iowa on this very important issue and are attempting to play it down. They don't believe that we should have the right to vote on this issue here in Iowa. Why? Likely has much to do with many campaign contributions from those in the gay "rights" communituy.

The majority of Iowans want the opportunity to vote on this extremely important issue that has huge ramifications. The majority, no... basically ALL of the Democrats in Des Moines don't believe that we should have that right and won't let any legislation pertaining to this see the light of day.

Our local state senator, at a recent town hall meeting, was asked repeatedly about getting the opportunity to vote on this by an elderly couple. They were told that if their line of questioning continued the meeting was over. After asking yet again and adding that the majority of Iowans want this, Heckroth stated that he didn't care what the majority of Iowans wanted, but would vote based solely on his own convictions!

That seems to be the attitude in Des Moines on a plethora of issues. They don't care what we think or believe that we don't know how to think for ourselves. Guess they forgot who put them in office. Let's not let any of these elitists officials in Des Moines forget who handed them their walking papers this coming November.

The Growing Disdain for Elitist Politics

I believe we all saw what just happened in Massachusetts this past week, with the election of a Republican to the U.S. Senate seat which had been held by Democrats for more than 50 years. The entire nation had their eyes on this state and on this election. However, seeing is but part of it. Do we understand it? Do we really understand just what's going on? Even more importantly, do those in Washington understand it or will they continue with the status quo?

There is a growing movement across the country today that includes people from every walk of life, but mostly the coveted "middle-class" voter, of which I am one. This movement isn't necessarily against a political party, the president or any one person, but against an entire ideology. Some call it a revolution. I merely call it waking up.

Middle America has awoken from its' slumber and is sick and tired of politics as they are and as they have been for some time now. As a "middle American" who feels the same angst, please allow me to explain, bearing in mind that there are those with different reasons.

We are sick and tired of business as usual and elitist politics and ideologies and those who practice them. You know who I'm talking about. All of those in office at the state and national levels who believe that they know so much better what is better for us than we could ever possibly know ourselves, at least without them telling us what that is.

Contrary to their popular belief, we are not a bunch of mindless robots in this country, though there are those of us who have, or had, let our guard down and allowed ourselves to be dumbed down by the liberal media and our education system. We hired these people by electing them to office to do a job for us, not to us, and as any employer has the right to let an employee go based on poor job performance, so do we have that right. When the employee, those we've elected, refuses to listen to the employer, those who elected them and pay their wages, it's high time they got their pink slips.

Many in government today seem to have forgotten that they work for us, not the other way around. Now, they'll tell us repeatedly that they're working for us and that they're doing this and that for us, but quite frankly actions speak volumes over mere words. Do they really think we're that stupid? The answer to that question is a resounding yes.

Most of our officials today are working only for themselves, so they can get re-elected and hold a place of esteem with good pay and great benefits, or some special interest group, which can usually be easily identified based on the earmarks they're behind. The easiest way to identify if your elected officials are really working for you is to check out their voting record. In many cases, once you do this you will likely be somewhat surprised. The fact of the matter is they're not listening to us.

A prime example of this at the national level is the current healthcare debacle. While most Americans are opposed to the current legislation and want their voices heard in Washington it's falling on deaf ears, at least until Massachusetts that is. Don't get me wrong. I believe that we do need some sort of reform of the healthcare system, but there is no real reform without tort reform and there's no such creature in this monstrosity of a bill in either the House or the Senate versions. Too many lawyers I guess.

This whole thing they're trying to cram down our throats is wrong, not to mention unconstitutional. Where is government-run healthcare covered in the constitution? Or taxpayer funded abortions for that matter? And if this healthcare plan is so great, why have they made themselves exempt from having to participate?

What happened when people across the country took to the streets with Tea Parties and made their way to legislators' town hall meetings to voice their opinions, express their feelings and ask real questions? They were belittled, ridiculed and called names by the elitist politicians and the liberal press. They really don't want to hear what we have to say.

What happened to the bipartisanship promised by this president and the C-SPAN coverage of the debates he also promised while campaigning. So much for transparency. This administration and the current congress have been about as transparent as a 6-foot-thick lead wall. Isn't it wonderful when our elected officials follow through on their campaign promises?

The same government that has both created and destroyed social security and medicare wants us to give them carte blanche to do the same with healthcare? For real? This might be funny if it weren't so serious. With every inch we the people give them they take 10 miles. This is but one issue currently staring us all in the eyes today. The whole point is the fact that they're not listening to us on much today because they know so much better what's best for us. They're better than us, more intelligent than us and they'll continue to do things their way, period... until we fire them.

It's time we stand our ground and take our country back. With every move and every vote made in Washington today we lose more and more of our individual freedoms and powers, while the government gains more and more. They have forgotten that they work for us, not us for them. I believe that our founding fathers would be horribly offended by what we've done with what they fought so hard to give us.

And before the Republicans begin gloating, they need to remember why they're not in power now. Because they were fired after they quit listening. They are only the beneficiaries of the fallout created by this current movement and are not exempt. This is not a Republican or Democratic thing, it's a we the people thing. No party or politician is exempt. And we the people are fed up. We have brains and we have votes and fully intend to use them both.

We must remain vigilant from now through November and beyond. The very soul of our nation depends upon it. Our children and grandchildren depend on us. It's time we the people took our country back.

The President's Plummeting Approval Rating

As you may, or may not have heard, President Obama's approval rating has dropped to below 50%. This is the first time in history that a president's approval rating has dropped so far, so fast. It would appear that it's well on it's way to matching congress' dismal approval rating.
I stated, in an earlier piece that I wrote before the election, that it would only be a matter of time, approximately a year, before those who were sucked in by the liberal media would begin to come out from under the ether. It appears that time has now arrived, with many Americans now suffering from a severe case of "buyer's remorse".
If these Independents, some Democrats, and a few mislead Republicans, would have researched the candidates better, or even at all, before the election, they would have heard, from Obama himself, exactly what he intended to do once in office. Unfortunately, many Americans believed everything they heard on the evening newscasts and in the campaign advertising and were sold a complete bill of goods.
We have taken the most hard turn to the left in history. So much so, that given a few more of the far-left's passed bills we could likely become the U.S.S.A. (United Socialist States of America).
We've already seen what happens when the American people decide to stand up and voice their opposition to this administration's agenda through a string of legislators' town hall meetings and nationwide Tea Parties. The far-left's Pelosi, Reid, and others have called them stupid, ignorant, Nazis, and completely dismissed them.
Now it's time for the American people to really stand up and do the right thing. It's time to fire those that we employ and have put in office, as they seem to have forgotten that. They have forgotten that they are supposed to be in D.C. working for us and NOT special interest groups.
I believe that Thomas Jefferson said it best, "When the people fear the government, that is tyranny. When the government fears the people, that's liberty." It's time to take back our liberty.

While We Were Sleeping…

You’re sitting in your place of worship on a Sunday morning, surrounded by family and friends. As the pastor delivers a prayer, you sit with eyes closed and your mind tuned into the pastor’s words… and God. The prayer is abruptly interrupted by a loud commotion. You quickly open your eyes only to see your pastor being forcibly restrained by police officers.

Some around you in the congregation sit wide-eyed, paralyzed by fear, while others sprint for the exits, only to be blocked by other police officers. After the pastor is marched out in handcuffs and those who attempted to leave are escorted back to their seats, a man takes the pulpit and announces that your pastor has been arrested and will be formally charged and tried as a terrorist.

As you sit in complete trepidation, you hear that a passage from the Bible in the message your pastor delivered a few weeks prior, “Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.” - 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 (New International Version), is now officially deemed “hate speech” and is a “human rights” violation...

Though this hasn’t happened here yet, it may become a possibility much sooner than you think as the homosexual lobby has now got its way in getting “hate crimes” legislation passed. Yes, while we were sleeping, whether caught up in the busyness of life today or simply victims of complacency thinking someone else will take care of it, the traditional family and traditional marriage have now taken a severe blow.

The Senate voted on a dangerous hate crimes bill that Senator Harry Reid attached as an amendment to a National Defense bill. The homosexual movement and its cronies in the Senate were so concerned about having their bill debated on its own merit, as individual legislation, that they attached it to a much needed Defense Authorization bill. As we now move forward, religious freedom, as we’ve known it from the conception of this nation, will likely have to give way to constitutional law as same-sex “marriages” are legalized.

It’s already happening around the globe. In Canada, where these laws are already in place, a newspaper ad quoting from the Bible on homosexuality was deemed a “human rights offense” and the newspaper and the man who placed the ad were both forced to pay three homosexuals $1,500 each, merely because they objected to it. Also in Canada, a high-school teacher was suspended without pay simply because he’d written a letter to the editor sharing his belief that no one is born gay. (U.S. News & World Report, 4/11/04)

There have been cases in England, Sweden, Belgium, and Spain where pastors and other Christian leaders have been arrested for speaking out against homosexuality and, sadly enough, we’ve already seen cases here as well. I wrote a few years ago about a group of 11 Christians (including a couple of grandmothers) arrested in Philadelphia under “hate crimes” legislation, while merely conducting an evangelistic outreach during a gay pride event there. Each faced 47 years in prison and $90,000 in fines.

As I wrote last week, this is not about hate. It’s about truth and carries with it far-reaching moral, health, and economic implications into our schools, workplaces, churches, and our homes. My intent is to educate and inform you as to just how so, however, as this legislation has passed I may not be able to do so.

Homosexual activists have often referred to Bible-believing, Christian activists, who won’t succumb to all the shades of gray in society today, as the only thing standing between them and society fully embracing their agenda. Of course homosexual activists and their human secularist allies want God and His infallible Word removed from this debate altogether, for without God we have no moral compass and will be apt to accept nearly anything.

It’s NOT About Hate

It’s not about hate. It’s not about being bigoted. It’s not about being intolerant. It’s not even about fear or a host of other things that the anti-traditional marriage movement would have you believe. What it’s really about, for those of us who stand in opposition to redefining marriage here in the United States of America, is truth.

Contrary to what homosexual activists, organizers, and their supporters would have you believe, the vast majority of us who stand in opposition to their movement are not a venomous brood of vipers filled with nothing but contempt for them or their “cause.” Just as I know that there are many caring and well-meaning men and women in the homosexual lifestyle who do not have contempt for us.

Though there are those on our side of this debate that have gone overboard with the rhetoric, there are many more in the same-sex “marriage” camp who are practicing real hate, absolute intolerance, and full-blown deceit.

I had a “live and let live” mentality toward the gay community until I realized that wasn’t enough for them. What they really want, as I’ve seen firsthand, is to force public acceptance and approval by any means necessary and if you have the audacity to stand in their way you’d better look out! Once the gay “rights” movement began forcing their way into my home and my way of life, as well as thrusting their ideals upon our children through our public education system, that’s when I drew my line in the sand.

Here’s some truth for you pertaining to the hate you’ve been told we’re spewing, if we oppose their lifestyle in any form. Homosexual activists very methodically and purposefully use words describing us as ignorant homophobes, racists, bigots, right-wing nuts, and more. I do not have an ounce of hate for any living the homosexual lifestyle, nor do I use derogatory terms to describe them.

Homosexual activists, however, have a very calculated plan to prop up homosexuality, while denigrating their enemies, with the aid of the mainstream media and Hollywood. They really have no desire to persuade people theirs’ is a legitimate cause, but only wish to tear down their opponents by linking them with the abovementioned. The real hate is being propagated by this anti-traditional marriage movement.

Here’s an example of a few of their tactics as outlined in “The Overhauling of Straight America”, by Marshall Kirk and Erastes Pill in Guide Magazine: 1. Talk about and gayness as loudly and often as possible (almost any behavior looks normal if you’re exposed to it enough); 2. Portray gays as victims, not as aggressive challengers (gays must be cast as victims in need of protection); 3. Give protectors a just cause (encouraging straights to be their protectors by using the media to cast gays as victims); 4. Make gays look good (by painting gays as pillars of society); 5. Make the victimizers look bad (make anti-gays look so nasty the average Americans will dissociate themselves from them); 6. Solicit funds (an unprecedented fundraising drive). (View the entire 11-page document here http://www.abidingtruth.com/_docs/resources/8142838.pdf)

There are many things going on in our nation today that I take issue with and I’ll get to them eventually, however, this issue, same-sex “marriage”, is by far one of the most detrimental to our future. Over the course of the next few weeks I will enlighten you as to how this movement will affect you and your family or as it already has.

Marriage Re-defined

Do you know Marsha Ternus, Mark Cady, Michael Streit, David Wiggins, Daryl Hecht, Brent Appel, and David Baker? Probably not, but you should, as these are the seven unelected officials who chose to legislate from the bench and be YOUR voice on the matter of marriage here in Iowa.

Marriage in Iowa has now been formally defined, or redefined, by the Iowa Supreme Court, not our legislature and not we the people. Sorry, but this is not their intended place in the grand scheme of things. For those of us who remember anything about the very basics of how our government was designed and laid out, it is the legislature that writes law. The fact is that the job of the judiciary is merely to interpret the law, as it was written. We seem to have more and more judges across this nation today who are only more than eager to legislate from the bench, whether it be for political gain, “political correctness”, or merely political ignorance.

I often hear our nation referred to as a “democracy”. For those who are unsure, the definition of a democracy is: 1. Government by the people, exercised either directly or through elected representatives. 2. The common people, considered as the primary source of political power. 3. Majority rule. (The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language)

However, what we really are is a “republic”, though the terms democracy and republic are virtually identical today. The definition of a republic is: A state in which the supreme power rests in the body of citizens entitled to vote and is exercised by representatives chosen directly or indirectly by them. (The Random House Dictionary)

I find it odd that none of the definitions I found included; a government of “the squeaky wheel gets the oil” or where the courts are the supreme power. They both do state, however, the power of the people “through” their elected representatives. So, I guess if we feel that those we’ve elected to represent us are not hearing us, acknowledging us, or truly representing us, at both the state and federal levels, then it’s time to replace them with those who will. This goes for our judges as well.

Though we do not actually elect our judges, we do have the opportunity to vote on their retention. Do we, as taxpayers, wish to continue paying the six-figure incomes of judges who contradict our ideology and impose their own? I will vote NO on every judge until they see fit to tell us where they actually stand ideologically and would recommend that you do the same. By the way, three of the seven Iowa Supreme Court justices who ruled against traditional marriage are up for retention in 2010 and will be on our ballots.

Many of our elected officials serving in Des Moines today have received thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from the anti-traditional family movement and are now beholden to them with their votes, or lack of, in the State House. Campaign funds have been strategically targeted here in our state from activists in Hollywood, CA; New York, NY; Denver, CO; Harvard, MA; and Miami, FL, to name but a few. Right here in our backyard, Andrew Wenthe, of the Iowa House, received over $13,000 from homosexual activists for his last campaign and the powerful Senate Majority Leader, Mike Gronstal, who repeatedly shot down any effort to raise a marriage amendment, received over $11,000, to name only a couple. The Iowa Democratic Party received over $51,000. (www.LetUsVoteIowa.org)

Based on the current state of our State Legislature, the amount of money being poured out by same-sex marriage proponents, the manipulation of public opinion by the media and Hollywood, and the very loud and offensive condemnation of any and all critics of same-sex marriage, I doubt much will be accomplished legislatively to protect the traditional family here in Iowa short of a Constitutional Convention held by “we the people” in 2010.

Iowa was specifically targeted by the anti-traditional family movement, as they knew just how difficult a process it is to make any constitutional changes here and believe that the people of our state who oppose their agenda being forced upon us lack the fortitude to see it through. Guess it’s time to roll up our sleeves and get to work…
